How are animal years calculated?

The "animal years" concept compares how fast different species age relative to humans. A mouse that lives 2–3 years experiences a full biological life — birth, growth, reproduction, and old age — in that short span. That's equivalent to roughly 80 human years compressed into just 2 years. The multiplier (39.5 for mice) captures how much faster a mouse's biological clock ticks compared to ours.

Conversely, a Bowhead Whale can live over 200 years, meaning its biological clock runs far slower than a human's. At a multiplier of 0.4, a 30-year-old human is only about 12 in "whale years" — still a youngster. Giant Tortoises are similar: with lifespans regularly exceeding 150 years, a 30-year-old human is barely a teenager in tortoise terms.

These multipliers are approximations based on typical maximum lifespans for each species. Real animals vary widely based on diet, environment, breed, and genetics. Small dog breeds like Chihuahuas consistently outlive large breeds like Great Danes — which is why they carry different multipliers in the table above.
