Building out the Animal-to-Human Years Calculators

I was thinking about other age-based curiosity-driven calculator ideas like the ‘How old would I be on Mars?’ one. And an easy one that people would identify with easily is one related to their pets.

While creating this, I went to Claude and asked for list of lots of animals and their age multiplier related to humans. I learned that dog lives aren’t all the same - that small breeds and large breeds are different.

I envisioned the user being like, “My dog sure is acting pretty old. I know she’s 16 years - I wonder what that means in human years,” then finding a calculator like this one to satisfy their curiousity.

Similarly, I could see someone doing the flipside, wondering, “Ok, I’m 18 years old - so if I were a dog equivalent, how old would I be?” So I made that a separate calculator.

When building this site, I did wonder if I should just have both types of calculator options on one page. But I find there’s a lot of value in getting as single-use as possible. First, it makes me have more content as the website creator. Second, it simplifies the interface of the calculator for the user, making it easier to tell at a glance what it does. (And this, too, helps me as the website creator - I want the calculators to feel easy to use.)

So in additon to pets, we also need think of the animals that far outlive humans - whales and turtles. So those are added in to the list, too.

For the Animal to Human Years calculator, Claude decided to also throw in a life stage label, which I found useful, so I kept it. For example, a 3-year-old Labrador comes out to about 18 human years - a teenager, basically.

Give them both a try - particularly the comparison table on the first one. Let me know what you think.
